March 31, 2020 - new ShareSync File Streaming Desktop app for Windows

On March 31st, 2020, our new ShareSync Desktop app for Windows will provide users with a choice of using the app in the traditional file syncing mode or the new file streaming mode.

  • What is File Streaming mode?
    • File Streaming mode is an option in the desktop app that allows users to set their My ShareSync folder to behave like a mapped drive whereby it doesn’t sync files to the local disk by default. Rather, it presents all of the user’s files/folder within their Windows Explorer interface without downloading them.  It only downloads (or streams) files when they are opened or created locally.  As such, it’s generally suitable for users that have smaller hard drives and/or limited network bandwidth
  • What is the difference between File Streaming and File Syncing mode?
    • File Syncing mode syncs all files and folders unless you explicitly tell it not to (using Selective Sync)
    • File Streaming mode does the exact opposite. It only syncs the files that you are using (i.e. files that you have opened or created locally)
    • You can find more details on their differences here.
  • How does backup work in File Streaming mode?
    • File Streaming selection only impacts the behavior of the My ShareSync folder.
    • The same backup capabilities are supported for both admins and end-users.
  • Availability
    • New Customers:
      • Since March 31, 2020, the new application is available in all standard download locations (i.e., ShareSync Resources page in Admin Control Panel, Welcome emails sent to newly provisioned end-users, etc.)
    • Existing Customers
      • Existing customers will NOT be proactively updated at this time.  However, if you’d like to convert one of your customers to the Streaming mode, you can follow the instructions provided here
  • Limitations
    • The streaming app is not currently supported on Mac, Windows 7, and devices using ARM processors
    • Installation process is terminated with a machine reboot request. This happens if .Net Framework 4.5.1 is installed as part of the ShareSync installation. The ShareSync installer should be re-launched after reboot
    • In some case, overlay icons which depict the location of the file (cloud vs local) or sharing state (private vs shared) may not display.  They can be restored with a Windows Explorer restart
    • JPEG files are automatically downloaded if Windows Explorer View is set to Extra Large Icons or Preview
    • Search by file content in My ShareSync folder leads to all content downloading. (i.e. Content Search should be switched off in Windows Explorer if it’s enabled)
    • Files from My ShareSync cannot be played using Windows Media Player.  Any other media player should work
    • Save As to My ShareSync from MS Edge and Snip & Sketch is not supported.  Files can saved in any other folder and moved to My ShareSync.
